changing from humira to enbrel Options

Hello Everyone,

I'm about to change from humira injections to enbrel as the humira has stopped working effectively for me. I'm also about to start injecting with mtx instead of tablets. Is there anyone out there who has had this change? Was it effective? Also, can anyone give me any tips on making the injection in the legs less painful!!!???? I can cope with it in my tummy (more flab!!) but in my thigh - it's more musclely (???) and it hurts like hell! Any comments gratefully received......many thanks, Allison xx

Hi Ailsa,

I haven't been on enbrel but I inject humira and can relate to the pain when injecting in the thigh! In fact, the last time I did that it was so painful I jumped and lost my grip on the pen and dropped it ,so didn't get it all!
I've decided now I will just use the tummy where there is plenty of flab! But if you are injecting mtx as well, plus I believe enbrel is given more frequently than humira, you will probably need to use your thighs. Some people say freezing the area first with an ice cube helps.
The mtx may not be as much as a problem because it is a syringe and needle, much easier to control than the pens, you can inject more slowly.

Hi Allison
Good luck with the enbrel, I used to inject mtx but stopped last week and have gone back on the tablets, think the injections were too toxic for me.. Im waiting now to start infliximab chose that as I really didnt like injecting myself. Like you I found it quite painful in my leg but tummy is much better..Hope everything goes ok luv Ceri x

Hi Allison
I have been on Enbrel for 6 weeks now but have only used my stomach using left side one week and right side the next. I always leave it half an hour after taking out of the fridge and this seems to help. However I take methotrexate in tablet form so only have to deal with the one injection.

Hope the Enbrel works well for you.

Hi Allison

I have been injecting Enbrel twice weekly for 7 years using needle and syringe and the drug has worked really well. Prior to that I was on Infliximab infusions which were also good but lost effectiveness after a year.

I have a few spots on the left side of tummy, (also can pinch way more than any inch), where I can shove the needle and I don't feel a thing. So, I always use the same spots and never swap sides! So far my tummy hasn't suffered from the injections! When I was on gold injections that went into the thigh and boy was it painful. not only that but it left a huge bruise!!

Thank you all for your replies......I forgot to mention that I also have enthesitis and it's this that's causing me the most pain at the moment. My rheumie is hoping that the enbrel will control this as well as the PSA. Does anyone else out there suffer from this? I find it incredibly painful and wondered if there were any tips out there as to how best to deal with it......thank you! Allison x
